The perfect 3-day Joshua Tree itinerary

The short version: spend day one inside Joshua Tree National Park's west side (Hidden Valley, Barker Dam, Keys View for sunset), day two between Pioneertown and Downtown Joshua Tree's shops and sound baths, and day three slow — pool, boulders, and a pizza-oven dinner back at the house. Both of our homes are 20 minutes from the park's west entrance, which makes this whole plan work without long drives.

Day 1 — The park's greatest hits

Enter through the west entrance (20 minutes from the homes) before 9am to beat the line. Start with the Hidden Valley Nature Trail — a one-mile loop through a rock-walled valley that's the single best introduction to the park. Then drive to Barker Dam (1.1 miles, water and petroglyphs) and let the climbers at Intersection Rock entertain you over a picnic lunch.

In the afternoon, detour to Skull Rock and the Cholla Cactus Garden if you have the energy — then time your exit for Keys View at golden hour: the whole Coachella Valley, the San Andreas fault, and on clear days Mexico's Signal Mountain, all from 5,000 feet.

Day 2 — Pioneertown, sound baths & the village

Sleep in, swim, then take the 15-minute drive to Pioneertown — an 1880s movie set turned real town. Walk Mane Street, then get lunch (and live-music tickets if they're playing) at Pappy & Harriet's, the high desert's most famous venue. Book ahead — Paul McCartney once played this 300-cap roadhouse.

In the afternoon, browse Downtown Joshua Tree Village (15 minutes): vintage shops, the world-famous crochet museum, and coffee from Joshua Tree Coffee Company — the same beans we stock at Infinite Horizon. If you planned ahead, catch a sound bath at the Integratron in Landers (25 minutes).

Day 3 — The slow desert day

This is the day guests tell us they remember. Sunrise from the deck, a long breakfast, then nothing: the hot tub, the hammock, the boulders on your own five acres. At Boulder Horizons, fire up the wood-fired pizza oven for a build-your-own dinner; at Infinite Horizon, it's pour-over coffee and the picture windows. Finish with the stargazing hour — the reason you came.

When to come

October–May is prime (daytime 60s–80s°F). Summer runs hot but nights are glorious and the pools earn their keep. Spring wildflower season (March–April) around Yucca Valley is spectacular. Whatever the season, both homes keep the pools and spas ready.
